An unanimous approval on 17 februari by the city council of Amsterdam makes the Structural Vision 2040 defenitive, after a preparation of years. The vision aims at an attractive, sustainable, green city with enough houses on suitable locations. Briefly said this means adding about 70.000 dwellings to the existing city according to the municipality. Most must be accomplished by intensifying within the city and not by the traditional green field developments. This is a positive step because dutch cities, also Amsterdam, are usually not so dense compared with other European cities.
Functional mixing should be the formula to intensify the city. Designated harbour and industrial zones are to be mixed with housing without loosing the existing functions and companies. The number of 70.000 seems to be a traditional reflex of the old times when the city, goverment, project developers and housing corporations could influence the housing production. The designated zones are mainly inner city developments, where the previous actors have minor positions, making the certaintity of realisation small.
The positive thing about this vision is it’s democratic development. With competitions, conversations and presentations civilians, professionals and politicians were consultated. Also the end result will be discussed in two debate. This will be 21 april 2011 in Felix Meritis with the main item ‘how to accomplish the vision’. That's something I also wonder so I think I will go too.
